Parole is an American city that’s been cut off from the rest of the world because it’s on fire and the flames can’t be put out. The creepy evil government/police, Eye in the Sky, watch over the city from their helicopters. Also, a drug exists within the city that can cure anything, but can have negative side effects and/or cause its users to develop superpowers. So it’s an awesome blend of dystopian, apocalyptic, urban fantasy and s

From the ones that really worked, Georgina Bruce’s “Horse under a chandalier…” lingered with me for days…very poignant. And Swirsky’s “Lady who plucked red flowers…” is also a favourite. Great theme for an anthology, hope it continues for years to come.

It was fun with some interesting ideas thrown in. I wondered what genre it fits into, though. Is there a section called Fiction for Open-minded People?

It’s a very light, relaxing read, but I think it needed more detail. There’s little there really explaining much about who Chris and Josie are as people apart from brief references to family members and past relationships that are never expanded upon. They have a potential to be very fleshed out, well written characters with beautiful character development if they’d been given that chance.

I REALLY debated about the 1 star. I’d really rate this 1.5 stars – there were parts I liked though and I fervently wish GR had 1/2 stars!

What I really liked about it was the way it is structured. The perspective alternates between the two main characters, but only after every six or more chapters. That the author manages to tell a complete story within this self-imposed limitation is laudable.

The prior book felt a little bit repetitive with the torture scenes and insular due to being in the camp the entire time. This book benefits from being more of an adventure story as the soldiers in love, who escaped in the prior book, travel back home evading capture and overcoming obstacles. They meet several colorful characters along the way who greet them hospitably. You can appreciate that Jeff has really done more research into the period setting than other authors. Sometimes with the descriptions, you can close your eyes and “see” Ian’s…
