Star Wars The Thrawn Trilogy

“The Thrawn Trilogy”, also known as “The Heir to the Empire trilogy”, consists of three novels: “Heir to the Empire”, “Dark Force Rising” and “The Last Command”. They were written by Timothy Zahn and take place in 9 ABY, about five years after Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.

Having revitalized the Star Wars franchise, this book series continues the story depicted in the film Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and introduces some new and notable characters, such as Talon Karrde, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Mara Jade, and Gilad Pellaeon.

In this book series Luke Skywalker becomes the first in a long-awaited line of Jedi Knights. But the galaxy is not yet safe. The defeated Imperial Fleet has found a new commander in the last of the Emperor’s warlords, Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has made two vital discoveries that could destroy Luke’s – and the Galactic Alliance’s New Republic. Out in the fringes of the galaxy, the most brilliant of all the hand-picked Grand Admirals is gaining strength and preparing to attack the New Republic. After convincing a Dark Jedi to join his side, Grand Admiral Thrawn is confident in his victory… but should he?

These novels succeed in capturing the essence of the films in his mix of old and new elements. The main characters for the most part act as we would expect them to, while obviously having gone through some changes since we last saw them at the Battle of Endor. The series had it all – terrific plot, great narration, wonderful characters. The author successfully presents us with a new adventure while still giving us a story that feels like Star Wars. The new additions he created feel like they fit in that universe and successfully expand the world of Star Wars beyond what was seen on screen. The explosive confrontation that results is a towering epic of action, invention, mystery, and spectacle on a galactic scale – in short, this novel series is worthy of the name Star Wars
