This book sheds light on that event through the experience of one Japanese-Canadian family forced to abandon their home and move inland. The story is told through the eyes of a child; that is, a child at the beginning of the story. It is also a story about the sustaining power of a unified family.

I remember having this book read to me when I was six or so. The story of Pip and his mysterious benefactor. It is just some seriously good storytellingReally enjoyed it despite knowing the majority of the story beforehand. It was one of the easier Dickens’ I’ve attempted before and the characters were all so interesting. If you are looking for that version, you will not find it in this incredible story. Treasure Island…

For a book with Agatha Christie as the detective protagonist, I would have expected a play-fair puzzle mystery. Unfortunately, Ms. Joseph didn’t really lay out all the clues yet at the same time, it seemed fairly obvious to me who the murderer was. Also, I found the characters a little one dimensional and even at times indistinguishable from one another. We are thrown right into the plot on page one and too many characters are intr Hidden Sins (Agatha Christie Investigates #2) (Agatha Christie Investigates Book 2) First published: August 15th 2015Rating: 8.62 stars GoodReads:Hidden Sins (Agatha Christie Investigates #2) Review: When I read the description for this book I thought what a neat idea – and it was. A novel that turns Agatha Christie into an amateur detective. Although it is the second of a series, Hidden Sins is just as good as a stand-alone, covering the period just after the first world war. Agatha…

Kept me up many a late night to keep reading to see what happens next. Historical fiction based around the war and the freedom fighters in France. A few spies thrown in for good measure and you have a great read. I learnt a lot about this period of the war and how many German soldiers hated Hitler’s rule and time in power. At times I had to re read parts to get a handle on the politics of such an era but this was very well written and obviously well researched. The French Promise (Luc & Lisette Book 2) First published: March 19th 2014Rating: 8.24 stars GoodReads:The French Promise Review: If you do yourself one favour this year, you MUST read this book. Absoutely breathtaking and heartbreaking beautiful.

My book club is made up of 80% Mormons, so imagine my surprise when I realized the bad guys of this book are none other than Utah Mormons in the 1800’s. The prior book felt a little bit repetitive with the torture scenes and insular due to being in the camp the entire time. This book benefits from being more of an adventure story as the soldiers in love, who escaped in the prior book, travel back home evading capture and overcoming obstacles. They meet several colorful characters along the way who greet them hospitably. In a written form rather than “speaking” it to her. It is based on Miri’s diary and letters that were written at that time. Nessya didn’t realize that her grandmother had lived through the holocaust. What makes this story unusual is what Miri’s father did that kept them from being captured and sent to the camps. He was a very clever man who was not lured by how the propaganda that the camps were wonderful plac

And I’ve gotta say, WOW–this novel blew all my expectations out of the water. I LOVED this book; it sucked me in from page one and didn’t let go. I’ve read and enjoyed Sam Marquis’ thrillers in the past, but Bodyguard is a cut above the rest, and that’s really saying something. As a result I bought this book & had it signed by the author. It’s very reminiscent of Raymond Chandler – a hard-bitten PI associating with both the wealthy and lower levels of society, but in 1930s Stockholm. The constant reference to street names became a bit annoying at times, but the story was extremely good and the denouement unexpected. Two more novels are planned in this series – I will d
